RISO(GRAPH)

A vintage and sustainable printing process producing a modern aesthetic. Working in collaboration with the team at OuterSpace Press Studio in Berlin, this technique elevates the photography of a campaign, editorial, or publication into something incredibly unique and limited edition.

There’s nothing quite like it. Whether emphasizing lush, technicolor-esque vibrant hues, developing the soft richness of skin tones and textures, or pushing graphic black and white compositions, the risograph’s distinct process provide singular results.

“THE ART OF BEING A WOMAN”

The concept for this denim campaign was born out of trying to answer the unanswerable question - what does it mean to be a woman. Focusing on how the idea of “the woman” has been created through the advertising world brought the visual potential into clear focus. Using tongue-in-cheek references to classic tropes and marketing from the last fifty years, the texture and color toning of risograph printing gave a vintage yet modern aesthetic to the images that were photographed on slide film and Super8.

Inspired by mass-market pulp fiction and film magazines from the 1960s, this hand-made risograph publication was created to extend the visceral experience of a night out at Danny and the Deep Blue Sea. Featuring early key art and rehearsal images, the booklet fits easily in the back pocket, to be taken out following the show and read at the bar, on the train, and even on the couch at home. The pages are meant to be touched—the grainy and graphic translation of the photographs is an almost tangible reflection of the play's tension.

THE BEAUTY OF RISO

A Super8 film shot during the post-production of the Warp + Weft “Art of Being a Woman” Campaign in the OuterSpace Press Studio in Berlin. Printing using the risograph is always an exciting collaboration with Magda and Claudio - one where it’s the magic that happens in the unexpected of the process that makes the results so uniquely special.
